I've been browsing YouTube for music videos this week. Doesn't matter the genre. It could be rap, R&B, soul, funk, rock, new wave, or what have you.
I posted a couple of videos on the 1980s version of Puttin on the Ritz here earlier this year but both of those videos have been deleted from YouTube. This time I think that YouTube isn't likely to bother it so I post it now and delete those other posts that I already have here.
I always though of this song as a nice snappy song. Especially with that nice early 1980s sound (performed by this artist named Taco).
There were two version of this video I should add. This is the controversial version where the permorers here were in blackface. In another version of this video, those sequences with the performers in black face were edited out and in some shots headshots of movie legend Gary Cooper were inserted.
I decided to look up more about this song and found out that originally the lyrics were to reflect the fad of well to do New Yorkers going to black jazz clubs in Harlem. I decided to see if I can find the original lyrics of this song and excuse me if I call this Exhibit A.
Have you seen the well-to-do Up and down Park Avenue On that famous thoroughfare With their noses in the air
High hats and narrow collars White spats and fifteen dollars Spending every dime For a wonderful time
Now, if you're blue And you don't know where to go to Why don't you go where Harlem flits Puttin' on the Ritz Spangled Gowns upon the bevy of High browns from down the levy Always spits Puttin' on the Ritz
That's where each and every lulu-belle goes Every Thursday evening with her swell beaus Rubbin' elbows
Come with me and we'll attend their jubilee And see them spend Their last two bits Puttin' on the Ritz
- short instrumental break -
(Boys, look at that man puttin' on that Ritz)
Now, if you're blue And you don't know where to go to Why don't you go where Harlem flits Puttin' on the Ritz Spangled Gowns upon the bevy of High browns from down the levy All misfits Puttin' on that certain Ritz
Come with me and we'll attend their jubilee And see them spend Their last two bits Puttin' on the Ritz
Come with me and we'll attend their jubilee And see them spend Their last two bits Puttin' on the Ritz
The song was later rewritten to be generally applicable to going out in the town in style.
Well my musical tastes are eclectic. You would think a person like myself would be into rap, R&B, funk and other musical forms. I'm big on classical music myself, but this song by the Beach Boys has a nice tune and rythym. Makes me want to make a visit to the beach...

I never understood the lyrics until now. This is where I got the lyrics from. Go back to the video post and try to follow along.

12:00 AM - Bears fight song is back w/ the Super Bowl Shuffle!!!
Been looking for this for a while. It used to be available at ChicagoBears.com but they do have that link anymore. But it did find it at a fan site for the Bears, BearsPod.com.
They feature audio podcasts or programs for Bears fans everywhere. Also I have a reason to watch the Bears for a change. Perhaps whenever I'm near a computer I should try to listen in on few games online. Especially since I may not be able to watch them on TV here in Atlanta. Ah modern technology.
Oh yeah here's some lyrics and an audio file. I just wish there was a way to save the recording...
Bear down, Chicago Bears, make every play clear the way to victory; Bear down, Chicago Bears, put up a fight with a might so fearlessly. We’ll never forget the way you thrilled the nation with your T-formation. Bear down, Chicago Bears, and let them know why you’re wearing the crown. You’re the pride and joy of Illinois, Chicago Bears, bear down.
Oh yeah and hear a rendition from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
UPDATE: The Bears from 1985 do their Super Bowl Shuffle...
8:00 PM - I went to a Catholic Church for the first time...
On Wednesday night I went to St. Elizabeth Catholic Church located in the Bronzeville (also known as the Black Metropolis because it is a historic black neighborhood) neighborhood at about 41st & Michigan Avenue. And don't think I went to mass, it was actually for a memorial service of a family friend. And I thought it was nice.
The church was a lot more intimate than I'm used to. A nice pit with a table where the candles were lit and the podium in the background with a water fountain in the back. A big chair for the pastor. The benches were arranged in an unusual pattern that created a pit. It was arranged in the usual two rows of pews with a center aisle and outside aisle. I'm think I should find my way to a Catholic Church service one day.
I want to share this song that we sung during the memorial service there. It was nice.
Leaning on the Everlasting Arms
What a fellowship! What a joy divine, leaning on the everlasting arms! What a blessedness! What a peace is mine, leaning on the everlasting arms!
Leaning, leaning, safe and secure from all alarms Leaning, leaning leaning on the everlasting arms.
Oh, how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way, leaning on the everlasting arms! Oh, how bright the path grows from day to day, leaning on the everlasting arms! [REFRAIN]
What have I to dread? What have I to fear, leaning on the everlasting arms? I have blessed peace with my Lord so near, leaning on th everlasting arms! [REFRAIN]
